My Home Office Before

I turned an outdated lime-green room into a feminine home office with blush and brass accents, and added privacy with lockable French doors. Having a dedicated office was a must for me when house hunting, and I love that this room sits right off the entryway.

When I first revealed the mood board for the blush and brass makeover, a global crisis delayed the project—what should have taken a month stretched into seven. Still, the room finally came together and I love the result.

Here’s where the space started before the updates:

A good office that needed cosmetic updates.

One side had great natural light from two windows, but the wall color and draperies didn’t match the aesthetic I wanted. The opposite wall featured beautiful built-in bookshelves and cabinets that simply needed styling and organization.

Original Home Office Makeover Plans

The design began with placing the desk in the center of the room around a rug that inspired a feminine palette. The mood board combined blush tones, brass accents, floral curtains, and a painted plaid wall to create a bright, cheery space.

My to-do list included organizing the space, painting the walls a soft white, adding window treatments and a rug, finishing the back of the desk, styling the shelves, adding art, and creating a small seating nook.

  • Finish organizing the space – DONE.
  • Paint the walls Shoji White – DONE.
  • Add an overhead light – postponed for later.
  • Add blinds to the French doors – DONE.
  • Remove old curtains and hang new ones – DONE.
  • Add a rug – planned.
  • Make panels for the back of the desk – DONE.
  • Style the bookshelves – DONE (and always tweaking).
  • Order or DIY art – ongoing additions.
  • Add some pink plaid – DONE with a painted plaid wall.
  • Hang a calendar and art behind the desk – DONE.
  • Consider replacing knobs or toning down shine – postponed.

And here’s how it looks now:

I’m thrilled with the final space. I originally completed much of the update nearly five years ago, and since then it’s had a few small upgrades, including replacing my laptop with a desktop and improving ergonomics with desk risers and a computer stand.

Why Office Decor Matters

Decorating your office isn’t just about looks. A well-designed workspace can:

  • Enhance productivity by reducing distractions
  • Improve mood and lower stress
  • Make clients and visitors feel welcome
  • Reflect your personality and the culture of your work

Good news: you don’t need a big budget to make meaningful changes. Simple updates—new paint, organization, or lighting—can dramatically improve how you feel and work.

Now, let’s explore ten practical decorating ideas you can apply to any home office.

1. Start with a Functional Layout

A productive office begins with a layout that supports your workflow. Ask:

  • Can I move around comfortably?
  • Is my desk near natural light?
  • Are essential tools within reach?

Position furniture to minimize distractions and maximize comfort. For example, place your desk near a window for daylight and a pleasant view, but away from high-traffic paths.

I placed my desk in the center of the room facing the windows so I can see outside and also keep an eye on the entry—this helps me feel connected and in control of the space.

Adding Back Panels to the Desk

Because the desk floated in the middle of the room, the back needed finishing. I built simple back panels from plywood and 1×3 lumber, painted them to match the desk, and attached them with a brad nailer. It’s a straightforward DIY that makes the desk look complete.

I trimmed the panels slightly to accommodate desk risers and used basic tools to fit them from right inside the office.

2. Choose a Color Scheme That Energizes You

Color affects mood and focus. Popular choices for offices include:

  • Blues and Greens for calm and concentration.
  • Soft neutrals like gray, beige, or white for a clean backdrop.
  • Pops of yellow or orange in accents to spark creativity.

Pro tip: Keep walls neutral and introduce accent colors through accessories to refresh the room without repainting.

A large portion of my office’s color comes from a painted plaid wall behind the desk. I selected warm pink tones that brighten the room while still feeling refined.

The pink shades I used always make me smile—guests often assume it’s wallpaper until I tell them I painted it myself.

3. Invest in Comfortable Furniture

Your desk and chair are the centerpieces of your office. Prioritize ergonomics and comfort:

  • An adjustable chair with lumbar support to protect your back.
  • A desk at the right height—consider a standing desk or risers for flexibility.
  • Ample storage to reduce clutter and keep essentials nearby.

Comfort should be a top priority since you’ll spend long hours in this space.

4. Add Greenery for a Burst of Life

Plants add beauty and offer health benefits: they can boost productivity, reduce stress, and improve air quality. Office-friendly options include snake plants, pothos, succulents, and ZZ plants. If you prefer low maintenance, high-quality faux plants provide similar visual appeal.

I use a mix of real and faux plants in my office; the ZZ plant thrives with minimal care and adds vibrant green to the corner.

5. Incorporate Wall Art That Inspires

Blank walls can feel uninspiring. Add art and personal touches to boost motivation:

  • Framed motivational quotes
  • Abstract art in your color palette
  • A pinboard for goals, inspiration, and mood pieces
  • Personal photos or keepsakes to make the space feel yours

A gallery wall or a curated pinboard can keep your workspace visually interesting and aligned with your brand or personality.

Between the windows I hung printable art and a favorite seasonal print that ended up staying year-round because the colors fit so well.

6. Improve Lighting for a Brighter Space

Lighting is essential. A well-lit office feels energizing while poor lighting drains energy. Prioritize:

  • Natural light: use window treatments that allow light in without glare.
  • Task lighting: a desk lamp reduces eye strain during detailed tasks.
  • Ambient or statement lighting: adds warmth and style.

My office relies on daylight and a desk lamp for now; an overhead light is planned for a future upgrade.

7. Create a Distraction-Free Zone

A dedicated workspace helps you focus. Tips for minimizing distractions:

  • Choose a quiet area away from heavy household traffic.
  • Use noise-cancelling headphones or a white noise machine to reduce interruptions.
  • Add blinds or a door to separate the space visually and acoustically.

Lockable doors were essential for my home office—they let me set boundaries and avoid interruptions. I installed privacy bamboo shades on the French doors to block visual distractions and signal when I’m working.

8. Use Functional Yet Stylish Storage

Good storage keeps clutter out of sight and preserves a calm atmosphere. Consider:

  • Decorative baskets and bins for supplies
  • Floating shelves for books and decor
  • A rolling cart for flexible organization

I styled my built-ins with a mix of books, baskets, and closed boxes so the shelves look pretty and stay practical.

When everything has its place, it’s easier to stay organized and focused.

9. Set Up a Tidy and Inspiring Desk Area

Your desk should be organized and inspiring. Try these ideas:

  • Use a monitor stand to save space and improve ergonomics.
  • Add a desk mat to define your workspace.
  • Keep small decor pieces—like a candle, clock, or plant—for personality.

Declutter regularly and keep only essentials within reach to reduce visual stress.

10. Build a Cozy Nook for Breaks

Even the most focused workers need to recharge. If space allows, add a small break area:

  • A comfortable armchair or small sofa
  • A side table for coffee or books
  • Soft lighting to create a calming atmosphere

A cozy corner encourages short breaks and can improve long-term productivity. I plan to add a chair to the corner where my fiddle-leaf fig sits to create a reading and relaxation spot.
